This is going to be a mix of food and movies, two of my very favorite things. First off, Ben Wheatley’s phantasmagorical fungal folk horror with (with lots of strobe effects, be warned) is finally on a streaming site namely Hulu.
It comes with my highest recommendation and not just because I am a long time Ben Wheatley fan who feels that his imaginative work is not appreciated properly. Yes, people with photo sensitive epilepsy should excuse themselves. But those who aren’t will be treated to a prescient and fantastic film, made during the pandemic, that muses about the idea that we might not be the lords of the Earth that we think we are. It was made during the pandemic and it’s only getting more timely as the days pass.
This Labor Day weekend, you are going to be able to pick up sweet treats from Baker’s Bench and Sad Girl Creamery. Sad Girl Creamery, one of the best micro creameries, with a side of mental health, in Los Angeles is debuting a new series of flavors for September and you can DM Sue Ellen Mancini to order some pints for pick up this weekend. Here’s the ordering info and the flavors (yes, there’s a vegan flavor) :
I’m scoping out all the flavors but the Brown Butter Pecan Mezcal sounds divine. I might just get them all.
Jen Yee’s Baker’s Bench is going to be open all weekend, instead of the usual Friday and Saturday only schedule, and this includes Monday. Her baked goods are all VEGAN and some of the crispiest croissants and Danishes I’ve ever eaten. When you bite into them, they crunch. She really got vegan pastry right. I’m not a vegan and I really like them.
These are the cinnamon knots that Yee has promised will be available this weekend. Generally her menu is plain and chocolate croissants, fruit Danishes, subject to current market fruit availability, a fruit and savory panna cotta, cookies, and muffins.
LOOK AT THAT SHINE! I wish Substack would let me post video so you could see this Danish’s vegan glory, but BOOOO, I CAN’T.
I’m also going to note that the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival starts today and is a hybrid in person and virtual festival. Horrible Imaginings is always good value and their programmers have great taste in films, they programmed the short film that became CENSOR in a previous year, and they always have great retro anniversary screenings, like their hilarious and spooky showing of THE TINGLER in PERCEPTO. That means you got your ass buzzed during the scariest parts of the movie and let me tell you, the audience went wild. Here’s the schedule for the virtual screenings so you can watch at home if you aren’t in Orange County, but you can go totally go to the screenings in person at The Frida Cinema, don’t let me stop you. Just wear a mask. The festival kicks off tonight with a screening of WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR.
That’s it for right now. Look forward to more as my work schedule, job hunting schedule and bouts with Long Covid exhaustion allow! I would post about the return of Quartersheets and House of Gluten, but the ordering starts in ten minutes and it’s going to sell out immediately. Love that pizza stealing parrot and those gorgeous cakes anyway!
